Indian stock markets remained closed on Tuesday, March 31, on account of Mahavir Jayanti. Trading on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India was suspended for the entire day.

This marks the first of two market holidays this week, with another closure scheduled on April 3 for Good Friday.

In the commodity segment, the market remained partially closed. At the Multi Commodity Exchange of India, the morning session was shut, while trading is set to resume in the evening session from 5 pm and continue till 11:30 pm or 11:55 pm, as per schedule.

Why This Week Requires Caution

Market participants face timing risks due to two holidays in the same week. Any major global developments during non-trading days may reflect only when markets reopen.

This could result in sharp gap-up or gap-down openings. Stop-loss triggers may not execute at expected levels, limiting the ability of traders to adjust positions.

Ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, fluctuations in crude oil prices, and key economic events in the United States add to the uncertainty.

Gold and Silver Trends

In the domestic market, gold futures ended marginally lower at Rs 1.44 lakh per 10 grams last week. Silver gained Rs 1,182, or 0.52 percent, to close at Rs 2.27 lakh per kilogram on the MCX.

Analysts said bullion prices were supported by weakness in the rupee against the US dollar, which declined over 1 percent to close near 94.80. Globally, gold fell nearly 2 percent, while silver gained on the back of demand from China and safe-haven buying.

Market Performance on March 30

On Monday, Indian equity indices recorded a sharp decline ahead of the holiday-shortened week.

The BSE Sensex fell 1,635.67 points, or 2.22 percent, to close at 71,947.55. The Nifty 50 dropped 488.20 points, or 2.14 percent, to settle at 22,331.40.

Broader markets underperformed, with midcap and smallcap indices falling around 2.6 percent each. Sectoral indices ended lower, with declines seen in auto, FMCG, consumer durables, capital goods, telecom, realty, and banking stocks.

Among major losers were Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank, Bajaj Finserv, State Bank of India, and InterGlobe Aviation. Hindalco Industries, Coal India, ONGC, and Power Grid Corporation of India were among the gainers.
