Aubrey Plaza Honors Late Husband Jeff Baena at SNL50 in a Subtle Tribute
Aubrey Plaza made a heartfelt appearance at Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary special on February 16. This was her first public event since the tragic passing of her husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena, who died by suicide on January 3 at the age of 47.
Plaza, known for Parks and Recreation, introduced musical guests Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard. She wore a black blazer and pants over a tie-dye shirt, a fashion choice that fans quickly recognized as a tribute to Baena.

Special Meaning Behind the Tie-Dye Shirt
The tie-dye shirt held deep significance. In a 2021 interview with Drew Barrymore, Plaza revealed that she and Baena had worn tie-dye pajamas for their spontaneous wedding. During the pandemic, Baena became passionate about tie-dye, and Plaza’s outfit choice at SNL50 appeared to be a quiet nod to their special moments together.
Aubrey Plaza ’s Absence from the Golden Globes
Just a day after Baena’s passing, Plaza was scheduled to present at the Golden Globe Awards but understandably withdrew. Although she appeared in a Ritz crackers Super Bowl commercial earlier this month, the ad had been filmed in November, before her husband’s death.
Plaza and Baena’s Relationship and Career Together
Plaza and Baena were together for over a decade before marrying in 2021. They collaborated on several films, including Life After Beth (2014) and The Little Hours (2017). Following Baena’s death, Plaza and his family released a statement calling it “an unimaginable tragedy” and requested privacy during this difficult time.
At SNL50, Plaza’s subtle tribute to Baena spoke volumes, showing how deeply she continues to cherish his memory.
