Why the Poster of Triggered a Legal Dispute
The poster, released on April 4, 2017, showed Rajkummar Rao in the guise of Lord Shiva—complete with a moon on his head and Rudraksha beads—sitting on a silver bike. This portrayal sparked outrage in Jalandhar, where a case was lodged for allegedly disrespecting religious sentiments.
Arrest of Film's Director and Producer
Back in May 2017, the film’s director Ajay K. Pannalal and producer Tony D'Souza were arrested in Mumbai under similar charges. They were later released on bail. The backlash stemmed from a complaint filed by Hindu leader and filmmaker Ishant Sharma at Jalandhar’s Division No. 5 police station. He described the depiction of Lord Shiva as “insulting and derogatory.”
Censor Board Had Objected
According to media reports, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had flagged a scene where Rajkummar Rao, in Lord Shiva’s attire, falls off a bike. The board had advised the makers to remove the scene to avoid hurting religious sentiments. However, the film eventually released on June 9, 2017, with a U/A certificate and no cuts.
Box Office of Behen Hogi Teri
Despite the buzz, Behen Hogi Teri failed to make a mark at the box office. It managed to collect just around Rs.3.06 crore globally and received mostly negative reviews from both critics and audiences.
