Beyonce, Diljit Dosanjh to Anoushka Shankar: Global Artists Who Embraced Indian Designers on the World Stage
From red carpets to global tours, international stars are proudly wearing Indian designers—turning handwoven fabrics and intricate craftsmanship into global fashion statements.
Indian fashion and craftsmanship has taken over the world stage, sometimes quietly and sometimes even loudly. And some of the world’s biggest stars are taking the charge by donning ensembles crafted by Indian designers. From handwoven silhouettes to rich work, these artists didn’t just wear Indian designers, they celebrated Indian craftsmanship.
Take a look:
Priyanka Chopra Jonas: Whether it’s wearing a custom ensemble by Rahul Mishra at a Diwali party in London or a blue ball-gown by Prabal Gurung, Priyanka Chopra Jonas has often bridged Bollywood elegance with Hollywood glam, all while taking Indian craftsmanship on a global stage.
Beyonce: Global icon Beyonce, during her Renaissance Tour, wore a neon green Athena saree gown by Gaurav Gupta, featuring a hooded, asymmetric structure that draped and flowed down from the midriff. For the second-ever Wearable Art Gala, Beyonce wore a custom gown created by Falguni Shane Peacock, making her presence feel in the room she walked into.
Anoushka Shankar: During her India tour, Anoushka Shankar made a compelling case for modern Indian style on stage, appearing in a custom Anita Dongre ensemble in Mumbai, a Ritu Kumar creation in Hyderabad, and a Payal Khandwala look in Bangalore. Each appearance felt thoughtfully curated, blending ease, elegance and cultural pride, and reinforcing her role as an artist who instinctively elevates Indian craftsmanship through personal expression rather than spectacle.
AR Rahman: For his 2009 Oscar win, AR Rahman made Indian craftsmanship shine by donning a black sherwani designed by Sabyasachi. The Oscar-winning artist, during his Jai Ho Concert, was styled by the designer Ritu Beri, representing New-Age India to the avant-gardeworld.
Katy Perry: Pop sensation Katy Perry stunned at the red carpet and on-stage in Indian designer Gaurav Gupta’s ensemble at the 11th Breakthrough Prize Ceremony in Santa Monica, highlighting the avante-garde craftsmanship of the popular Indian designer’s label. Even during notable appearances, Katy Perry has made statements in Falguni Shane Peacock’s creations and Manish Arora’s creations.
Diljit Dosanjh: During his iconic debut at the Met Gala last year, Diljit Dosanjh made his royal presence felt by representing Punjabi heritage in a Prabal Gurung sherwani, paired with a diamond-layered turban and the lion-headed, jewel-studded kirpan. Even during his international appearances such as on the Jimmy Fallon show or during the Coachella concert, Diljit Dosanjh did not step down from representing Indian heritage on the world stage.
Sarah Jessica Parker: Sarah Jessica Parker looked like a sight to behold in a custom Falguni Shane Peacock lehenga in ‘And Just Like That’. The American actress was seen wearing an exquisitely handcrafted, red-based, multicoloured lehenga with intricate embroidery of silk threads.
These artists not only wore Indian designer pieces on global platforms, but they brought international spotlight to Indian craftsmanship, like it has always deserved!
