Ekta Kapoor Clarifies She Left ALTT in 2021 After OTT Ban

TV czarina Ekta Kapoor has responded to the recent ban on ALTT by the Indian government, making it clear that she has had no connection with the OTT platform since June 2021. While she continues to lead Balaji Telefilms, she emphasized that both she and her mother, Shobha Kapoor, officially stepped down from ALTT more than three years ago.

In a detailed statement released on Saturday, Ekta expressed concern over her name being linked to ALTT following its ban for allegedly streaming obscene content. She stated that the media should verify facts before drawing conclusions and clarified that any implication of her involvement is “strongly denied.”

ALTT Now Operated by Balaji Telefilms

Kapoor further added that ALTT, initially a wholly owned subsidiary under ALT Digital Media Entertainment Ltd., has now merged with Balaji Telefilms. As of June 20, 2025, the platform is officially operated by Balaji, a company listed on BSE and NSE. She reiterated that Balaji Telefilms continues to function under the highest standards of corporate governance and legal compliance.

Why the Government Banned ALTT, Others

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) banned 25 OTT apps and websites, including ALTT, ULLU, Desiflix, and Big Shots, for violating multiple Indian laws. The official notification, dated July 23, cited violations under The Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, Section 67 of the IT Act, and Section 292 of the IPC. The content reportedly included sexually explicit scenes and nudity, prompting the crackdown.
