FIR Filed Against Yash Rathi for Derogatory Language During IIT Bhilai Fest
Stand-up comedian Yash Rathi is in legal trouble after an FIR was filed against him for allegedly using offensive language during his performance at IIT Bhilai’s annual festival. The event, held on November 15 in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district, was attended by students, staff, and parents.
Clips from Rathi’s performance have gone viral on social media, sparking outrage and prompting multiple complaints to the police.

FIR Registered Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
Durg Superintendent of Police Jitendra Shukla confirmed that an FIR was registered under Section 296 (obscene acts) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Jevra Sirsa police outpost. The investigation is ongoing.
Protests from Multiple Groups
The performance drew criticism from groups like the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), and the Karni Sena. These groups filed complaints with IIT Bhilai’s administration, local authorities, and the police, alleging inappropriate conduct by the comedian.
IIT Bhilai Responds
According to IIT Bhilai Director Rajiv Prakash, the institute’s management intervened during the performance and asked Rathi to leave the stage when his language became objectionable.
Prakash stated, "This is the first time such language was used at an annual fest. We were shocked and have resolved not to host stand-up comedy shows in the future." The institute has also lodged a formal police complaint against Rathi.

Following the controversy, IIT Bhilai has decided to reevaluate its policies for cultural events to avoid similar incidents. The case continues to unfold as authorities investigate the complaints against Yash Rathi.
