18 OTT Platform Blocked: The Indian government's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) has taken a firm stance against eighteen Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms due to the presence of obscene and vulgar content. Anurag Thakur, the Union Minister of I&B, announced this decision after several warnings were issued to the platforms.

Scope of Blocking

Alongside the eighteen platforms, the ministry has also blocked access to 19 websites, and 10 apps, including 7 on Google Play Store and 3 on Apple App Store. Additionally, 57 social media accounts related to these platforms have been restricted nationwide. Shockingly, one of the banned OTT apps had garnered more than 1 crore downloads, while two others had over 50 lakh downloads on Google Play Store.

Content Violations

The ministry emphasized that the content circulated by these platforms violated several laws, including the IT Act, Indian Penal Code, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act. Despite having a combined following of over 32 lakh users on social media, the content was deemed inappropriate.

Social Media Exploitation

According to the ministry, the banned OTT platforms extensively utilized social media for promotion, sharing trailers, specific scenes, and external links to attract audiences to their websites and apps.

In a formal statement, the ministry expressed concerns over the nature of content hosted on these platforms. They cited instances of obscenity, vulgarity, and the portrayal of women in a demeaning manner. The content depicted nudity, sexual acts, and inappropriate contexts such as relationships between teachers and students, as well as incestuous family relationships. It further included sexual innuendos and explicit scenes devoid of any thematic or societal relevance.
