Kim Namjoon, also known as RM, stands out as the leader of the globally acclaimed music sensation, BTS. Yet, he's much more than just that. As the group's primary rapper, producer, and one of the primary songwriters and lyricists, RM has collaborated on nearly every BTS song with his fellow members.

The Korea Music Copyright Association acknowledges his contribution to over 200 songs, making him the youngest Korean artist to achieve this milestone. This incredible portfolio includes not only his work for BTS but also his solo projects, such as his debut mixtape, 'RM,' in 2015, 'Mono' in 2018, and most recently, 'Indigo' in 2022.

On September 12, Namjoon will be celebrating his 29th birthday. As we join in this celebration, let's trace his journey as a songwriter, and lyricist, and honor his musical legacy. Meet the creative genius and philosopher behind the stage persona that propelled BTS's incredible success.

RM is known not only for his musical talent but also for his exceptional intelligence. With an IQ of 148 and a top percentile rank in South Korea's KSAT (a national-level university entrance exam), he faced the conflict of choosing between the expected path of academic success and his passion for music. His early lyrics reflect this internal struggle, addressing the pressures of education in South Korea.

RM's journey began when Bang Si Hyuk, the CEO of BigHit Entertainment, recognized his potential early on, making him a foundational member of BTS. Even at the young age of thirteen, RM had already made a name for himself in South Korea's hip-hop scene. His passion for writing bloomed early, and he dreamt of being an author or poet from a young age.

As a budding artist, Namjoon secretly scribbled lyrics on bits of paper tucked within his school books, even if it meant facing reprimands. His solo track 'Voice' reflects his experiences as a top student with a burning desire to take the stage and perform. Similar sentiments are expressed in songs like 'Born Singer,' where BTS grappled with the decision to challenge societal norms.

RM's lyrics often engaged with his inner world while addressing broader societal issues. BTS's early vlogs featured an 18-year-old RM rapping about the importance of voting. Their debut EP, 'No More Dream,' criticized the educational system that funneled young minds into a predetermined career path. These songs were revolutionary for their time.

In 'Strange,' a collaboration with Suga from his solo mixtape D-2, RM delved into critiques of capitalism, consumerism, societal polarization, and issues like police brutality and racism in 'Change,' a joint track with American rapper Wale.

Another enduring legacy of RM is the song 'Spring Day,' where BTS addressed the Sewol Ferry Tragedy and the wounds of marginalized communities. His lyrics reflect depth and empathy, offering fans a greater awareness of themselves and the world.

RM's remarkable wordplay, command over both English and Korean and poetic allegories have created a unique portrayal of the human experience through haunting melodies, which is RM's trademark style.

In 'Trivia: Love,' RM played with the similarity between the Korean words for 'life' and 'love,' crafting a meaningful song. He often drew inspiration from the natural world, infusing his lyrics with introspection and metaphors of nature and life. His songs, like '134340' and 'Whalien 52,' use clever allegories to explore isolation and loneliness.

'Boy With Luv,' featuring Halsey, eloquently conveys the adoration they receive from fans. In 'Everythingoes,' RM uses the cyclical nature of seasons to illustrate the transience of pain. 'Moonchild' pays tribute to those who find solace when the moon rises, while 'Forever Rain' personifies rain as a compassionate friend.

RM's growth as a songwriter has seen him increasingly explore the complexities of his personal self and public persona. In "Intro Persona," he grapples with the conflict between conforming to his public image and remaining authentic.

In his latest album, 'Indigo,' Namjoon confronts these questions in the context of BTS's hiatus as a group. He reflects on the meaning of being an artist with a private self and the challenge of preserving oneself in the face of public expectations.

RM has been a cultural phenomenon, combining poetry and music to provide insight into his inner world. With each song, he invites audiences to get to know RM ('real me') a bit more. On his 29th birthday, we celebrate his profound impact on music and culture. Happy Birthday, Namjoon!
