Is Shabana Azmi going to be a part of ‘Masoom…The Next Generation’?

Shekhar Kapur’s directorial debut film Masoom is revered as a cult classic in India. The film starred Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi in the lead and now Shekhar Kapur is working on a follow up movie titled ‘Masoom… The Next Generation’.

The auteur’s recent post on social media has people wondering if Shabana Azmi is also going to be a part of the much awaited sequel.

Sharing the post Shekhar Kapur captioned, ‘Can you narrate your script/story to us?’ Simple request right ? Sounds simple .. But for me - and am sure for other passionate artists- my script lies in what I call the ‘Zone’ The ‘Zone’ is a special place. The ‘Zone’ is precious. The ‘Zone’ is where my creativity exists’ it’s not easy for me to enter the ‘Zone’ .. the ‘Zone’ is a temple.. it’s a sacred space .. So when Shabana Azmi asked me to at least tell the story of ‘Masoom, the next Generation’ I balked. I hesitated .. I was in London and she on the other end of the phone in Mumbai. How do narrate a story to the actor you need to play a main part .. on the phone .. How do you get into the Zone on the phone ? So after a lot of pauses and .. umms .. and aahs .. Shabana asked me .. ‘ Shekhar I will do any film with you anyway .. but do you have a story ?’ That challenge suddenly propelled me into the ‘Zone’ .. I was no longer on the end of the phone.. I was in the world of my story .. I was with characters as if they were there .. speaking to me .. I could smell the physical space of my story .. I was in the ‘Zone ‘.. I was laughing with my characters and then sobbing .. as I narrated the emotional points of the story.. .. and when I was sobbing I would stop .. my voice would choke .. I had to stop .. and when I did .. there was a long pause on the other end .. ‘Shabana .. are you there ? ‘
I heard a gentle sob .. and silence .. I had managed to pull Shabana into the ‘Zone’ .. on the phone .. from London to Mumbai .. After a long pause Shabana said ‘It’s beautiful , Shekhar, you have to make this film’ That’s the power of story telling. For if you really believe .. passionately believe .. others will enter the zone .. And laugh with you .. cry for your characters ..
