CBFC Approval of (Emergency) After Delays

Last month, the film was granted a 'UA' certification by the CBFC, but not without conditions. The certification required the filmmakers to make three cuts and provide factual sources for some controversial scenes. One key edit involved visuals showing Pakistani soldiers attacking Bangladeshi refugees.

Shreyas Talpade, who plays former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the film, expressed his relief in an interview: "Delays can be frustrating, but we’re happy that the film finally got the green signal to release."

A Story Rooted in History

Set during the Emergency period in India (1975-1977), the film portrays a time when civil liberties and press freedom were severely restricted. Kangana stars as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, with the story exploring critical events like the declaration of Emergency and her assassination.

The film also features an ensemble cast, including Shreyas Talpade, Milind Soman, Anupam Kher, Mahim Chaudhary, and the late Satish Kaushik. The screenplay is penned by Ritesh Shah, while Kangana herself directed and co-produced the film.

Legal Hurdles and Controversies

The film has faced several controversies, particularly regarding its depiction of historical events. The Bombay High Court previously directed the CBFC to consider objections raised by Sikh groups before granting certification.

Despite the challenges, Emergency is now set to release, and the makers are confident it will resonate with audiences. Fans can look forward to this historical drama showcasing pivotal moments in India’s political history.
