The much-awaited sequel to Lucifer, L2: Empuraan, has stormed the global box office, collecting a whopping Rs.165 crore ($19.4 million) in its first four days. This makes it the highest-grossing Indian film opening of 2025, surpassing Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava, which previously held the record with $19.1 million.

Strong International Performance in L2: Empuraan; Chhaava

A major factor in L2: Empuraan’s success is its impressive overseas earnings. The film earned $17.3 million internationally, with the U.S. box office contributing $2.2 million alone. In India, the film grossed nearly Rs.60 crore in its first four days, further solidifying its dominance.

Prithviraj & Mohanlal’s Winning Formula

Director Prithviraj Sukumaran, who also plays a key role in the film, has once again delivered a gripping story with a global appeal. The film’s high-octane action sequences and Mohanlal’s commanding presence have resonated with audiences worldwide, making it a massive success.

Controversy in India & Mohanlal’s Apology

Despite its box office triumph, L2: Empuraan faced backlash in India. Some audiences accused the film of pushing an ‘anti-Hindu agenda’ due to its depiction of the 2002 Gujarat riots. In response, Mohanlal issued a public apology, emphasizing that the film was not intended to promote hatred or political bias. He assured fans that the team acknowledges the concerns and takes full responsibility. Prithviraj also supported Mohanlal’s statement by sharing it on social media.
