Disney took to social media to share the trailer, writing, “Experience the epic story of how an orphan became a King. #Mufasa: The Lion King, only in theatres December 20,” The two-minute and thirty-four-second trailer offers a glimpse into the developing relationship between young Mufasa and his brother Scar, highlighting their journey from close siblings to fierce rivals.

Directed by Jenkins, Mufasa serves as a prequel to the 2019 live-action version of The Lion King, delving into the early life of the future ruler of Pride Rock and his complex relationship with Scar. Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. provide the voices for young Mufasa (a role originally voiced by James Earl Jones in both the 1994 and 2019 versions) and Scar (previously voiced by Jeremy Irons in 1994 and Chiwetel Ejiofor in 2019).

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter returns to voice Nala, while her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, will lend her voice to Kiara, the daughter of King Simba and Queen Nala.

The film also introduces new characters, with Tiffany Boone voicing Sarabi, Kagiso Lediga as Young Rafiki, Preston Nyman as Zazu, and Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros, a powerful lion with grand ambitions for his pride. Additionally, Thandiwe Newton voices Eshe, Taka’s mother, Lennie James voices Obasi, Taka’s father, Anika Noni Rose voices Afia, Mufasa’s mother, and Keith David lends his voice to Masego, Mufasa’s father.

The 2019 live-action adaptation, directed by Jon Favreau, was a massive success, grossing an impressive $1.66 billion worldwide. Mufasa: The Lion King is slated to hit theaters on December 20.
