In a heartbreaking turn of events, three elephants have met untimely deaths in the past 48 hours, marking a distressing series of incidents in Odisha. According to officials familiar with the matter, the unfortunate events unfolded in three distinct locations, each presenting a unique and tragic circumstance.

The initial incident occurred on Tuesday night along national highway-49 near Kantabahal village in Keonjhar district. A speeding truck, laden with iron ore and bound for Pallahara, collided with one of the tuskers as it was crossing the highway. Despite the elephant initially getting back on its feet and attempting to walk, it succumbed to its injuries after taking only a few steps, as confirmed by a forest department official.

In a separate and equally distressing incident, an elephant undergoing treatment for a bullet injury, administered by a veterinary team from Nandankanan Zoological Park, lost its battle for survival on Wednesday morning. The tusker, reportedly shot in the leg in the Ranpur Forest range of Nayagarh district, passed away despite the efforts of the medical team.

Adding to the somber narrative, a five-year-old tusker met its tragic end on Monday night in the Rasol area of Dhenkanal district. The young elephant was electrocuted after coming into contact with a live wire hanging from an 11 KV line, as explained by forest department officials. The lifeless body was discovered during the morning patrol conducted by forest officials.

The successive loss of these majestic creatures has prompted concerns and calls for heightened vigilance and conservation efforts to protect the wildlife population in the region. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding each incident to determine if any preventive measures can be implemented to avoid such heartbreaking occurrences in the future.
