Oscars 2025: Suriya’s ‘Kanguva’ Joins Contenders’ List Alongside 6 Other Indian Films

Oscars 2025: Suriya’s action-adventure film Kanguva, directed by Siva, has surprised fans by making it to the contenders’ list for Oscars 2025. Released on November 14, 2024, the big-budget movie, also starring Bobby Deol and Disha Patani, garnered mixed reviews but managed to secure a spot in the coveted list of eligible films.

Suriya’s Performance Shines Despite Mixed Reviews

While Suriya’s performance in the film received widespread praise, the movie faced criticism for its execution. Adding to the discussion, Suriya’s wife and actor Jyothika called the negative responses to the film "propaganda," sparking debates among fans and critics. The film also features a cameo from Suriya’s brother, Karthi, and hints at a sequel in its conclusion.

Indian Films in the Oscars 2025 Contenders’ List

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced 323 eligible films for this year’s Oscars. Out of these, 207 films met the eligibility criteria for the Best Picture category.

While Kiran Rao’s Hindi drama Laapata Ladies, co-produced by Aamir Khan, was India’s official entry, it failed to make the shortlist of 15 movies competing for the Best International Feature Film category.

Oscar Timelines and Ceremony Details

Voting for the nominations begins on January 8, 2025, and ends on January 12, 2025.
The final list of nominated movies will be announced on January 17, 2025.
The Oscars 2025 ceremony will take place on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood, United States.
