Renowned Russian Ballet Star Vladimir Shklyarov Dies in Tragic Fall
Vladimir Shklyarov, a celebrated Russian ballet star, tragically passed away after falling from the fifth floor of a building in St. Petersburg on Saturday. Shklyarov was a principal dancer at the prestigious Mariinsky Theater, where he held the highest-ranking position.
The Mariinsky Theater confirmed his death, expressing profound sorrow. “This is a huge loss for the entire Mariinsky Theater team,” the statement read.

Investigation Points to an Accident
Russian authorities are investigating the circumstances of his death. According to Russian state media RIA Novosti, the preliminary cause is believed to be an accident. Emergency service sources reported, “He died a natural death. It’s not a crime.”
Shklyarov was reportedly on strong painkillers and was set to undergo complex spinal surgery just two days before the incident.
A Legacy in Ballet
Born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Shklyarov graduated from the prestigious Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet in 2003 and joined the Mariinsky Theater the same year. He was promoted to principal dancer in 2011 and captivated audiences worldwide with performances in iconic productions like Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, and Sleeping Beauty.
Beyond Russia, Shklyarov showcased his talent with international companies such as London’s Royal Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre in New York. His illustrious career earned him accolades like the Léonide Massine International Prize and the title of Honored Artist of Russia in 2020.
Tributes Pour In
Diana Vishneva, a fellow principal dancer at the Mariinsky, called his death a “tragedy” for the ballet world. In a heartfelt Instagram tribute, she wrote, “You were so loved by your audience. You were the favorite partner of many ballerinas.”
Advocate for Peace
Shklyarov was among the prominent Russian artists who spoke out against the war in Ukraine. In 2022, he expressed his support for peace, saying, “I am against the war in Ukraine! I am for the people, for a peaceful sky above our heads!”
Remembering a Family Man
Vladimir Shklyarov is survived by his wife, fellow dancer Maria Shirinkina, and their two children.
