'The Lady Killer': Filmmaking in India is a high-stakes game, and not every film hits the jackpot. In one of the most shocking box office flops in Indian cinema, Ajay Bahl’s 2023 thriller The Lady Killer turned out to be a colossal failure, earning only Rs.60,000 against a budget of Rs.45 crore.

The Arjun Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar starrer managed to sell merely 500 tickets across the country before exiting theaters.

Why 'The Lady Killer' bombed at the Box Office

Reports suggest The Lady Killer faced a troubled production with several re-shoots, inflating its budget and ultimately leading to an incomplete release. The movie’s limited release in November 2023 was allegedly part of a last-ditch effort to secure an OTT deal with Netflix. With no promotional campaign and a rushed release, the film struggled to attract audiences and fell flat at the box office.

OTT setbacks and final release on YouTube

Initially set for an OTT release, the film’s poor theatrical performance led Netflix to cancel its deal. Eventually, The Lady Killer was released on YouTube in September 2024, where it has garnered over 2.4 million views. However, the film continues to receive criticism, cementing its place as India’s most expensive box office disaster.

This shocking debacle shows that even big budgets and star casts cannot guarantee success in the world of cinema.
