25 OTT Platforms Face Ban Over Pornographic Content

In a major move, the Indian government banned 25 OTT platforms on Friday for showcasing material it termed “pornographic in nature.” Ullu, ALTT, and Hulchul were named among the violators, with authorities citing repeated breaches of ethical content guidelines despite prior warnings.

Ullu 's 'House Arrest' Already Under Scrutiny Since May 2025

Though Ullu took down House Arrest in May 2025 following ministry intervention, officials stated the platform continued pushing obscene content. The Information and Broadcasting Ministry had already sent cautionary messages to several OTT platforms as early as September 2024.

Digital Content Regulator Also Took Action

The Digital Publisher Content Grievances Council (DPCGC), led by a former Supreme Court judge, had already ordered Ullu to remove over 100 web series. Sources claim Ullu complied temporarily but later re-uploaded the unedited versions, effectively bypassing the regulatory red flags.

NCW Steps In, Summons Ajaz Khan and Ullu Founder

The National Commission for Women (NCW) summoned Ullu founder Vibhu Agarwal and host Ajaz Khan following the outrage. Public backlash intensified after videos surfaced online showing contestants being asked to perform sexually explicit tasks, leading to demands for an immediate ban.

Public Reaction Fuelled the Ban

A viral post on X (formerly Twitter) tagged the IT Minister, calling House Arrest "beyond the definition of vulgar" and demanded an immediate ban. This public pushback played a significant role in accelerating government action against the offending OTT platforms.
