IMD Issues 'Yellow' Alert for Himachal Pradesh Until Friday, No Relief Expected

Continuing heavy rainfall wreaks havoc in Himachal Pradesh, where the state's transport department is compelled to suspend 30 routes due to significant disruptions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a 'yellow' alert, cautioning about the potential for moderate to heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides that have already inflicted damage on the hilly terrain.

IMD Scientist Sandeep Kumar Sharma anticipates heavy rainfall in parts of districts including Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, Mandi, Kullu, Una, Bilaspur, and Kangra. This scenario has unfolded as the region witnessed a 41% surge in rainfall from June to August, with Lahaul Spiti as the sole exception.

Although some respite is projected from August 26 onwards, the ongoing monsoon season has brought relentless cloudbursts and landslides, resulting in widespread destruction and loss of life. Consequently, the suspension of 30 routes exacerbates transportation challenges across the area.

The monsoon's destructive force was evident when landslides triggered the collapse of several vacant buildings in Kullu district. Fortunately, these structures had been previously identified as unsafe, preventing casualties.

In summation, climate-related incidents during this monsoon season have led to 238 deaths in Himachal Pradesh, underscoring the severity of the situation.
