Southern California experienced a rare double trouble recently, as Tropical Storm Hilary and a 5.1-magnitude earthquake made their presence felt. Tropical Storm Hilary marked the first such storm to hit California in over 80 years. It brought heavy rainfall, triggering landslides and flooding roads in San Diego.

The U.S. Navy even ordered ships and submarines to leave bases in San Diego, Coronado, and Point Loma to ensure their safety.

The main concern with Hilary was the excessive rainfall it brought. Some parts of arid California and Nevada were forecasted to receive as much rain in a day as they usually get in an entire year. This led to worries of flash floods, especially in areas that struggle to absorb sudden moisture.

The state of California, accustomed to wildfires and droughts, faced simultaneous challenges as a wildfire near the Oregon border grew by 2,000 acres overnight. On top of this, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake shook the region, centered near Ojai. Although not causing significant damage, it did cause noticeable swaying in Los Angeles, about 60 miles away.

Over 5 million people in Southern California and southwestern Nevada were at high risk of flash floods, prompting Governor Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency in 11 counties. Beaches and state parks were closed to ensure public safety.

Twitter users have been sharing the photos and videos of the storm continuously.

The Atlantic hurricanes Emily and Franklin were also under monitoring, with concerns about heightened sea surface temperatures that could affect the hurricane season. Forecasters predicted an unusual number of named tropical cyclones this season, ranging from 14 to 21, attributing the uncertainty to puzzling circumstances.

In summary, Southern California faced an extraordinary day with the convergence of a rare tropical storm, an earthquake, and ongoing challenges posed by wildfires, showcasing the region's vulnerabilities and the need for preparedness.
