Mpox In India: First case of monkeypox (MPox) strain has been reported in India, This is the same strain which has been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO). The patient had returned to Kerala from UAE last week. Meanwhile he had tested positive for the virus last week.

According to the Health Department of Kerala, the victim is 38 years old. He had quarantined himself on September 17 after showing symptoms of monkeypox. Earlier on September 9, the first patient of monkeypox was confirmed in the country. The Union Health Ministry had sai monkeypox strain Clade-2 was confirmed.d that a person who returned from abroad was kept in isolation on September 8 on suspicion of monkeypox. Samples were taken and tested, in which the monkeypox strain Clade-2 was confirmed.

On 9 September first patient of monkeypox was confirmed

The Union Health Secretary Apoorva Chandra issued an advisory to all states and union territories regarding monkeypox. States should follow the guidelines of the Health Ministry regarding monkeypox. Action should be taken on the Communicable Disease Alert (CD Alert) issued by the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) on monkeypox.

States should follow the guidelines of the Health Ministry

All though 30 cases of monkeypox found in India since 2022 According to WHO, 99,176 cases and 208 deaths of monkeypox have been reported in 116 countries globally since 2022. More than 15,600 cases and 537 deaths have been reported so far this year. Since 2022, 30 cases of monkeypox (clade 2) have been reported in India. The last case was reported in March 2024. There are 32 laboratories in India to test monkeypox.

WHO advisory

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared monkeypox a global public health emergency on August 14. On August 20, India issued an alert at all ports, airports in the country as well as on the borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh.

While this is the second time in two years that WHO has declared a health emergency regarding monkeypox. According to the WHO report, monkeypox started from the African country Congo. Ten countries of Africa are in its grip. After this it spread to the rest of the world.
