"Post-monsoon maintenance work" will be done on Mumbai's two runways. For the length of the work, there won't be any flight operations, it continued.

Both RWY 09/27 and RWY 14/32 will be temporarily out of service on October 17 from 1100 to 1700 as part of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport's extensive post-monsoon runway maintenance plan, according to the announcement.

In order to "effectively schedule flights to ensure a smooth completion of the maintenance," it was further said that the airport has coordinated with all significant stakeholders. Six months in advance, a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was sent to the airlines and other interested parties.

Maintenance tasks are part of the annual post-monsoon preventive maintenance plan. This entails checking the runway's surface for signs of wear and tear that could have developed over the previous six months. The objective is to provide effective and safe aviation operations.

On May 2 of this year, the airport completed its pre-monsoon maintenance and repair work on both runways.

According to officials, the main goal of the temporary closure is to carry out repair and maintenance work that is necessary to maintain the airport's infrastructure to the highest standards.

Nearly 900 flights are handled daily at the Mumbai airport. Thus, the statement also urged travellers' support and cooperation. Domestic aviation traffic at Mumbai International Airport just surpassed August 2019's pre-pandemic average by 108%. Over 4.32 million people used the airport, an increase of 32% year over year (YoY). Over 1.1 million more people travelled internationally, a 33% increase in travellers. 20,711 domestic flights and 6,960 international flights passed through the airport in total during that time.
