What is Project Gaganyaan?

The Gaganyaan project, which has a name derived from the Sanskrit term for a ship or conveyance to the sky, has been created at a cost of 90 billion rupees. If it is successful, India will become one of just four countries to have sent a person into space, joining the US, China, and the Soviet Union.

Three individuals will be sent by ISRO on a 3-day journey to an orbit 400 km above the planet as part of the Gaganyaan mission, and they will be safely returned.

The Gaganyaan TV-D1 mission is crucial because, if it is a success, ISRO will be able to carry out more tests to determine whether the Crew Module, Crew Escape System, and propulsion systems are capable of carrying out upcoming crewed and uncrewed flying missions.

What Is the Goal of TV-D1 and what is this mission is about?

The TV-D1 mission, or Flight Test Vehicle Abort Mission-1, is Gaganyaan's first developmental test flight mission. The mission is significant because it will show the functioning of the Crew Escape System and is the first uncrewed flight test mission for Gaganyaan.

The in-flight abort of the Crew Escape System will be performed as part of the Gaganyaan TV-D1 mission.

This means that the Crew Escape System will be dropped while the Crew Module is in the air, allowing ISRO to test various flight parameters and determine whether the Crew Escape System can successfully separate from the Crew Module in order to save astronaut lives during crewed missions in the event of an accident. Future test flight missions are anticipated by ISRO.

How this mission will be conducted?

The first Gaganyaan programme would be launched if this test flight was a success, setting the stage for the rest of the qualification tests and uncrewed missions.

Test Vehicle Abort Mission (TV-D1) will launch the crew module and crew escape mechanism at a height of 17 km, and they are intended to make a safe ocean landing 10 km east of Sriharikota, India. They would eventually be recovered from the Bay of Bengal by the Navy. Scientists want to protect the crew that will actually fly on the Gaganyaan mission in the crew module attached to an LVM-3 rocket through this effort.
