"Government soon to introduce GPS based toll system"

<p>Indian government soon to have an GPS based Toll system across the country, the government is now planning for new technology for toll collection systems in the next 6 months to replace existing highway toll plazas in the country, said the Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said on March 24, 2023.He further said that this move would help to reduce the traffic and would be charging for the exact distance travelled on the highways by the vehicles. He further said that this move would help to reduce the traffic and would be charging for the exact distance travelled on the highways by the vehicles. The announcement of the new technology was done by him at an event organised by industry body CII.

He said, “The government is looking at new technologies including GPS-based toll systems to replace toll plazas in the country…We will bring new technology in six months.” 

After the survey conducted by the ministry of road transport and highways the average time spent by vehicles at the toll plazas in 2018-19, the average waiting time for vehicles at toll plaza was 8 minutes. With the introduction of FASTags during 2020-21 and 2021-22, the average waiting time of the vehicles has come down to 47 seconds.

The road transport and highways minister is now emphasizing on the need of reducing the cost of construction without compromising with the quality.
