February 2, 2024 - The state of Gujarat is witnessing a remarkable surge in its startup ecosystem, with projections indicating the creation of 48,138 direct employment opportunities by startups in the state by 2023. This information was disclosed by Shri Som Prakash, the Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, in response to a query raised by Rajya Sabha MP Shri Parimal Nathwani on February 2, 2024.

In 2019, Gujarat acknowledged the presence of 565 startups, a number that skyrocketed to an impressive 3,291 startups in 2023. The impact on job creation is equally significant, with startups in Gujarat contributing 6,077 direct employment opportunities in 2019, a figure that surged to 48,138 by 2023.

The Minister attributed this surge to the initiatives taken under the Start-up India campaign, launched on January 16, 2016, aimed at fostering innovation, investment, and a robust startup ecosystem in the country. This initiative has gained substantial momentum, with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) recognizing a total of 10,604 startups across India in 2019, and this number is anticipated to reach 34,779 by 2023.
