Gwalior, Kozhikode made to 55 new cities for UNESCO Creative Cities Network

As an achievement for India, two Indian cities are added to the list of UNESCO creative cities network.  The announcement was made on World City Day on October 31.

Two Indian Cities selected

The city of Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh and the City of Kozhikode in Kerala were added to the list of creative cities network.

The city of Gwalior was selected for the musical culture it embraces. It was added in the category of "city of music.

The south Indian city of Kozhikode was added for embracing literature in the category of  "city of Literature".

Both the Indian cities were were added to a list of 55 cities which joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN). These Indian cities got the recognition and acknowledgement for their strong commitment to "harnessing culture and creativity as part of the their development strategies, and displaying innovative practices in Human -centred urban planning," said UNESCO in an official statement on Tuesday.

With this list of 55 cities, the total number of creatives cities networks has gone up to 350 cities in over 100 countries. These 55 cities represent seven creative fields of Crafts and Folk Art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts and Music.

Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General said "The cities in our Creative Cities Network are leading the way when it comes to enhancing access to culture and galvanizing the power of creativity for urban resilience and development."

Union minister for Culture and tourism, G Kishan Reddy took to X to express his joy with the announcement. He said "A proud moment for India. Kozhikode in Kerala has been designated as the UNESCO ‘City of Literature’ and Gwalior as the ‘City of Music’ in the latest UNESCO List of Creative Cities Network. These cities get acknowledged & recognition for their strong commitment to harnessing culture and creativity. Congratulations to all stakeholders."
