Bharat Bandh on February 12: Will Banks, Schools and Transport Be Closed?
Central trade unions and farmer groups have called a Bharat Bandh on February 12, which may affect banks, transport and markets in several states.
India may see disruptions on February 12, 2026, as central trade unions and farmer organisations have called for a nationwide strike, or Bharat Bandh.
Public sector banks, government offices, transport services and markets in several states are likely to be affected. The extent of disruption will depend on local participation and security arrangements.
The strike has been called by a joint platform of central trade unions with support from farmer groups protesting against the four labour codes and the proposed India US trade deal.
Who has called the strike
A joint forum of 10 central trade unions has announced the bandh. These include INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF and UTUC.
The unions have opposed the four labour codes that replaced 29 labour laws. They have stated that the new codes weaken workers’ rights and reduce job security. They have also raised concerns over privatisation, wage issues and social security.
The unions have said strike notices have been served across sectors and preparations are under way.
Their key demands include scrapping the four labour codes and related rules, withdrawing the Draft Seed Bill, the Electricity Amendment Bill and the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India Act. They have also sought restoration of MGNREGA and withdrawal of the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission Act, 2025.
Will banks, transport and markets remain closed
Public sector banks and some government offices may see partial disruption depending on employee participation.
State run transport services, including buses, may be affected in states where unions have strong presence. Markets in protest hit areas may also remain shut.
Private sector offices are expected to function normally unless local conditions force closure.
Will schools and colleges remain closed
There is no nationwide order to close schools and colleges. However, educational institutions in states such as Kerala, Karnataka and Odisha may remain closed in areas where local organisations support the bandh or where transport services are disrupted.
Authorities in various states are expected to issue local advisories based on the situation on the ground.
