Chennai Temples Ready for Soorasamharam 2025: A Grand Devotional Celebration
The Kandaswamy Temple in Thiruporur is the focal point for Soorasamharam this year, where devotees will witness Lord Murugan slay the demon Suran. The divine act, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil, will take place near the eastern Rajagopuram between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on October 27.
Temple Executive Officer Kumaravel shared that nearly 10,000 devotees are expected. To ensure safety, the temple has arranged barricades, designated parking areas, and police deployment. The entire zone will have traffic diversions to maintain smooth pedestrian flow.

Tradition of Suran Dolls
A unique aspect of the Thiruporur celebrations is the creation of six new Suran dolls each year. These giant figures, made from bamboo frames, hay, jute, and papier-mâché, are crafted by a family of skilled artisans from near Puducherry. The dolls form an integral part of the temple’s daily procession and are symbolically destroyed during the Soorasamharam to mark Lord Murugan’s victory.
Grand Festivities at Vadapalani Temple
At Vadapalani Andavar Temple, the Laksharchanai ritual is ongoing. The Soorasamharam event will be conducted at 8 p.m. in front of the Rajagopuram, with an expected turnout of over 50,000 devotees.
Executive Officer Hariharan mentioned that the entire Kanda Sashti festival is expected to draw around 1.5 lakh devotees. Following the Soorasamharam, a grand Tirukalyanam (divine wedding) feast will be organized for 1,000 people on Tuesday evening.
Soorasamharam at Kandakottam and Siruvapuri
The sacred ritual will also be observed at Siruvapuri Temple in Tiruvallur district and Kandaswamy Temple in Kandakottam, located on Gujili Bajaar Road. Starting at 6 p.m., the event will feature Lord Murugan on a golden horse vahanam, symbolizing his divine valor.
Abhilash Gurukkal from Kandakottam Temple shared that the event will last for about an hour, with arrangements made to accommodate large crowds safely.
Government Ensures Smooth Conduct
Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) P.K. Sekarbabu has directed temple officials to ensure seamless execution of the festivities.
He emphasized that police watch towers, parking zones, drinking water facilities, and temporary toilets will be set up at all major Murugan temples expecting heavy footfall.
The minister, after participating in the Kanda Sasti Kavacham chanting by students of Ekambaranathar School and Karpagambal Arts and Science College, highlighted that over 2,400 students are taking part in the devotional recitations across Chennai’s temples.
