Avoid Touching Tulsi with Dirty Hands
On Dev Uthani Ekadashi, it’s strictly advised not to touch the holy Tulsi plant without taking a bath. Touching it with unclean hands is believed to displease Lord Vishnu, as Tulsi is considered his dearest consort. Always offer water or worship Tulsi after purifying yourself.
Do Not Pluck Tulsi Leaves
Devotees should avoid plucking Tulsi leaves on this day. According to scriptures, Goddess Lakshmi becomes upset if Tulsi leaves are broken on Dev Uthani Ekadashi. If Tulsi leaves are needed for rituals, they should be plucked a day before.
Avoid Cutting Hair or Nails
Cutting hair, nails, or shaving on Dev Uthani Ekadashi is considered inauspicious. It is believed that doing so on this sacred day disrupts spiritual purity and displeases divine forces.
Do Not Eat Rice
Rice consumption is strictly prohibited on Ekadashi. It is said that eating rice on this day leads to loss of virtue (punya) and invites bad karma. Avoid rice in all forms-cooked or raw.
Avoid Tamasic Foods
Tamasic foods like garlic, onion, meat, and alcohol should not be consumed on Dev Uthani Ekadashi. Devotees are encouraged to eat satvik food or observe fasting to maintain purity of body and mind.
Maintain Celibacy During Fast
Those observing the Ekadashi fast should also follow celibacy (brahmacharya). Maintaining purity in thought, word, and action is essential to receive Lord Vishnu’s blessings.
Avoid Arguments and Anger
Dev Uthani Ekadashi is a day of peace and devotion. Avoid unnecessary arguments, harsh words, or anger. Keeping calm and focusing on prayers ensures positivity and divine grace.
Dev Uthani Ekadashi is a day to awaken spiritual energy and devotion within oneself. By avoiding these seven things and dedicating the day to worship and mindfulness, devotees can invite happiness, prosperity, and blessings from Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi.
