Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Project has saved 40,000 Crore Rupees of the public
The Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana (PBJP) has saved the public approximately 40,000 crore rupees over the past 11 years. The list of medicines and surgical equipment under this project has now expanded to 2,425, including 2,110 medicines and 315 surgical products. Due to the quality of these medicines and products, people's trust in Jan Aushadhi Kendras is growing.
Although 16,955 Jan Aushadhi Kendras have been opened in response to the growing demand for medicines in the country. These centers are operating in all districts of states and union territories.
The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers announced on Friday that AYUSH products are now available at Jan Aushadhi Kendras. These include Triphala, Shilajit, Ashwagandha, and Chyawanprash Special, which are available at less than half the market price. Masks, diapers, rubber gloves, oximeters, rapid antigen test kits, syringes, and needles are also available at Jan Aushadhi Kendras under the PBJP.
Jan Aushadhi Project Saves People 40,000 Crore Rupees
According to the Ministry, the availability of affordable medicines and essential health products is rapidly increasing across the country under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana. Millions of consumers have received quality medicines at prices lower than the market rate through the scheme, and the increasing number of centers is expanding its benefits to remote areas. These medicines are purchased only from World Health Organization-GMP certified pharmaceutical companies.
Five major warehouses have been established across the country to supply medicines, including in Gurugram, Guwahati, Surat, Chennai, and Bengaluru. From here, medicines are supplied to the Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the country. These warehouses and Jan Aushadhi Kendras are connected through SAP-based software.

Additionally, point-of-sale software applications have been installed at all centers to ensure efficient supply of medicines and to prevent shortages at any center in the country. The Ministry stated that the target is to increase the number of Jan Aushadhi Centers to 25,000 by March 2027.
This model also provides entrepreneurship and self-employment opportunities. Center operators are provided incentives based on a fixed percentage of monthly purchases. Applicants in eligible categories are provided with financial assistance of up to ₹2 lakh.
Medicines available under the scheme are 50 to 90 percent cheaper than those available in the general market. Savings of up to 96 percent have been recorded in several categories. Napkins are available for one rupee, diapers for AYUSH products, and keeping women's health in mind, Jan Aushadhi Suvidha sanitary napkins are also available at only ₹1 per pad. By September 2025, more than 930 million pads had been sold.
In addition, several new items have been added under the Jan Aushadhi Yojana, such as protein powder, AYUSH products, oximeters, and templated surgical products. Products used in everyday life, including Jan Aushadhi Urja, Jan Aushadhi Bachpan, Poshan, Madhurak, and Pudina, have also been added. The Jan Aushadhi Sugam mobile app, available on the Google Play Store, has also been launched. Through this app, people can access information about the medicines they need and the locations of the centers.
It is noteworthy that the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana was launched with the aim of providing affordable and quality medicines. Over time, it has expanded and today it has become an important mechanism for drug availability across the country.
Summary
The Union Minister of State for Chemicals & Fertilizers, Mansukh Mandaviya, inaugurated the hi-tech Central Warehouse of Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) at Bilaspur, Gurugram on October 16, 2018. The warehouse, set up by the Bureau of Pharma PSUs of India (BPPI), will facilitate the seamless distribution of Jan Aushadhi generic medicines to all PMBJP Kendras functional across the country.
