Banks across India are closed today, February 28, 2026, as it is the fourth Saturday of the month, according to the Reserve Bank of India holiday calendar.
Under RBI rules, banks remain shut on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. They function on the first, third and fifth Saturdays unless the day is listed as a holiday. Banks are also closed on all Sundays and on regional and national holidays notified by the RBI.
Customers had sought clarity on whether branches would operate on February 28. As per the calendar, physical bank branches are not open for public transactions today.
Digital banking services available
Despite the branch holiday, customers can continue to access digital banking services. Internet banking, SMS banking and WhatsApp banking remain operational for registered users.
Customers can check account balances, download statements, order cheque books, pay utility bills, recharge prepaid mobile phones, transfer funds, book travel tickets and hotels, and review spending patterns through digital platforms. Cheque stop requests can also be placed online through the respective bank portals.
National and February holidays
Banks remain closed nationwide on Republic Day on January 26, Independence Day on August 15 and Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti on October 2.
In February 2026, banks are also closed in certain states on occasions such as Losar, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti and State Day or Statehood Day celebrations, depending on local notifications.
Customers are advised to check the RBI holiday list for their respective states before planning branch visits.
