According to a survey by audio-series platform Pocket FM, 81% of Indians regularly engage in audio entertainment, demonstrating the genre's rising appeal.

22,442 internet users participated in the poll, which was carried out between October 28 and November 15, 2015. Of those surveyed, 30% were women and 69% were men. Age-wise, Gen Z accounted for 35%, millennials for 58%, and Gen X for 7%. Geographically, tier-1 and metro areas accounted for 58% of the responders, while tier-2 towns made up 42%.

The study revealed that 71% of participants listen to audio content on their cellphones, underscoring the ease of use and availability offered by mobile devices. The surge in audio consumption at work and at home is shown by the fact that 29% of respondents indicated they preferred to listen to audio on tablets, smart TVs, desktops, and other devices.

Survey reported 81% of Indians regularly engage in audio entertainment

Drama was the most popular genre, drawing in 22% of people. Suspense and thrillers came in second at 21%, romance at 17%, science fiction at 12%, and comedy at 11%. A little over half of users preferred slightly longer episodes (15–30 minutes), while about 40% chose shorter ones (5–15 minutes). Just 25% of people said they favored 45–60 minute programs.

A little over three-quarters of those surveyed expressed a desire for audio content to be transformed into visual media like TV series and movies. Approximately 44% of respondents claimed to use audio to reduce stress, and 30% stated it helps them focus. Roughly 26% of respondents claimed to use it to block out distractions.

According to the survey, 42% of the participants stated they depended on the platform's own recommendations for material, while social media (21%) and recommendations from friends and family (17%) also had a big impact.

Remarkably, just 6% of users claimed to be influenced by influencers, compared to 58% who said they were very likely and 28% who said they were likely to tell friends about their favorite audio platforms.

Word-of-mouth generated the most buzz among the participants, as 42% of them relied on referrals from friends. Social media influenced 36% of users, lagging slightly behind.
