If you happen to be an aficionado of those deep, uninterrupted naps that even blaring alarms can't disturb, then there's an ongoing festival that deserves your attention. What's more, it not only celebrates your penchant for leisure but also rewards it handsomely. Known as the 'Festival of Laziness,' this event is currently taking place in the quaint village of Brezna in Montenegro, Eastern Europe. Remarkably, it offers a cash prize of €1,000, which equates to approximately Rs 90,000, to the individual crowned as the 'laziest citizen' capable of spending days luxuriating in bed.

Participants in this unique contest are presented with a rather peculiar challenge: they must avoid sitting or standing and remain comfortably ensconced on mattresses with minimal physical activity permitted. The goal is to secure the coveted title of the laziest participant.

This offbeat competition, which has been a tradition for the past 12 years, initially emerged as a response to debunk the stereotype that Montenegrins are inherently indolent. Interestingly, contestants are permitted to read books, use their mobile phones, and even entertain visitors, all while reclining in bed. The only respite they are afforded is a 15-minute break every eight hours, and their health is closely monitored to ensure their well-being.

Dubbed the 'Lazy Olympics,' this contest predominantly features participants from the Montenegrin village, but individuals from countries such as Russia and Serbia also join the ranks of laziness.

The event unfolds within a barn-like structure at a resort, where participants lie down with the curtains drawn. The room exudes the aroma of meals and used blankets, and contestants are provided with three daily meals. Strict supervision ensures that any attempt to sit or stand leads to immediate disqualification.

While many initially joined the competition for the monetary incentive when it commenced on August 21 this year, it has since evolved into a personal challenge for participants, pushing the boundaries of their own endurance and self-discovery. Consequently, many contestants remain engaged in the event, eager to test their limits and embrace the spirit of self-imposed idleness.
