Himachal's Worst Rainstorm, Delhi-NCR Prepares For More

There have been at
least 19 deaths attributed to the heavy rain that has hit many parts of north
India during the previous three days.

Knee-deep water still
covers many city streets and buildings.

More rain is expected
to fall over the next few days across the Indian states of Himachal Pradesh,
Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, Delhi, and the
surrounding territories.

People from Himachal
Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Delhi took terrifying photos of the destruction and
posted them online. The photos show automobiles floating like paper boats,
filthy waters rushing into residential areas, buildings flooded on the banks of
the swelling rivers, and land cave-ins.

Constant rainfall in
Himachal Pradesh resulted in landslides and flash floods that caused misery
in homes and businesses and brought an end to normal life. All major
rivers, including the Ravi, Beas, Satluj, Swan, and Chenab, are in spate, which
has washed away some shops and vehicles in Manali, Kullu, Kinnaur, and Chamba.

The bordering state of
Uttarakhand also saw landslides and flash floods, with some rivers and streams
reaching or exceeding their flood levels.

Due to the waterlogging
caused by the heavy rain, all schools in Gurgaon and Delhi are closed today.
The government of Gurgaon has also urged major corporations to have employees
work from home today due to heavy traffic.

After Haryana
discharged over a million cusecs of water from the Hathnikund barrage into the
Yamuna, the Delhi government established 16 control centres to monitor flood-prone
areas.

Arvind Kejriwal, the
CM, will preside over a high-level meeting to discuss urban flooding induced by
rain and the rising water levels of the Yamuna.

A red alert has been
issued for the districts of Kathua and Samba in Jammu and Kashmir. However,
after a three-day suspension, the Amarnath Yatra resumed on Sunday from the
Panjtarni and Sheshnag base camps.

In low-lying regions of
Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana, heavy rainfall caused significant waterlogging
and flooding, prompting authorities to take action in the worst-affected areas.

According to the India
Meteorological Department, an interaction between a western disturbance and
monsoonal winds is causing heavy rainfall in northwest India.
