IAF'S JOINT AIR DEFENCE EXERCISE WITH JAPAN
<p>The joint air defense exercise between the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Japan Air Self Defence Force (JASDF) was named Exercise ‘Veer Guardian 2023’ and recently concluded on January 26 in Japan. The joint air defense exercise between the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Japan Air Self Defence Force (JASDF) was named Exercise ‘Veer Guardian 2023’ and recently concluded on January 26 in Japan. This joint exercise was conducted on both ends in order to promote bonhomie between the IAF and the JASDF and enhance air defense cooperation between the two air forces.
Talking about Veer Guardian, it has been on Japan’s Hyakuri Air Base since January 12 and involved an IAF contingent comprising 4 Su-30 MKI, complemented by 2 C-17 Globemaster Strategic Airlift Transport Aircraft and 1 IL-78 Flight Refueling Aircraft. On the other hand, the Japanese contingent participated in four Mitsubishi F-2 and four F-15 combat jets.
Engagement by the IAF and the JASDF in air combat maneuvering involving interception and air defense missions was an aspect of the joint exercise. According to the Indian Ministry of Defence, “The exercise involved precise planning and skillful execution by both the air forces.” Furthermore, the conduct of air defense missions, “both in Visual and Beyond Visual Range settings,” was practiced during the exercise.

Exercise ‘Veer Guardian 2023’ provided the two Air Forces with an great opportunity to enhance their mutual understanding. The exercise also witnessed numerous interactions between IAF and JASDF personnel where various aspects were discussed by both sides. This enabled the participating contingents to gain invaluable insight into each other’s best practices and learn from each other’s unique capabilities.
