In his dorm room, the deceased, identified as K. Kiran Chandra, was discovered hanging. Chandra was a member of the institution's Electrical Engineering Department.

The father of the deceased son asked, "Why is there such high level of stress among IIT students? He was under stress because of a project, according to ANI.

In a statement, the institute highlighted that the student "chose the path of self-harm," and the police indicated they are looking into the situation.

The tragic death of K. Kiran Chandra, a fourth-year dual degree student in the Department of Electrical Engineering, has shocked the students, staff, and faculty of IIT Kharagpur, according to a statement released by the institution. On the evening of October 17, 2023, the resident of the Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Hall of Residence made the decision to harm himself.

The institute further disclosed that Kiran Chandra was in the dorm room with his two buddies an hour before he passed away. He was found hanging, and after being rushed to the BC Roy Technology Hospital, he was pronounced dead.

Up till around 7:30 PM, K Kiran Chandra was in his hostel room with two other persons. The other two students later went for their academic pursuits. In the aftermath, his room was discovered to be locked from the inside by fellow LBS Hall residents at 8:30 PM. He was discovered hanging when the door was pushed open. Security personnel and other students rushed him to the BC Roy Technology Hospital. Kiran was declared dead at about 11:30 PM, despite all the medical personnel's efforts, according to the institute.

Suicide rate among Indian men is 2.5 times higher than in women

According to a survey by The Lancet Regional Health, there has been an increase of almost one-third in suicide cases among Indian men over the previous seven years. 89,129 men died by suicide in 2014 compared to 42,521 women. By 2021, the ratio had increased to 2.64. Compared to 45,026 female suicides this year, 1,18,979 males occurred.

High Suicide rates among married men

For married males, the situation was even more alarming. In 2021, married men had a suicide death rate -- deaths per one lakh persons -- that was triple that of women, at 24.3 as opposed to 8.4 for women.

"As a result of these two factors, between 2014 and 2021, the male-to-female ratio of suicides increased from 1.9 and 2.5 to 2.4 and 3.2, respectively. In comparison to women, there was a 107.5% increase in men citing family issues as a cause between 2014 and 2021, according to the study.

The study's conclusions are supported by information from the National Crime Records Bureau.

The mortality rate from suicide was still 27.2 percent higher in men between the ages of 30 and 44. Between 2014 and 2021, the SDR increased by over 5 points, from 22.7 to 27.2. The suicide rate increased 5.6 points, from 20 in 2014 to 25.6 in 2021, among people aged 18 to 29.

Family problems seemed primary cause of stress

According to a study on the evolving suicide trends in India, family issues and health concerns are the two main causes of the increased suicide risk among Indian men.

Suicide rates among women may be lower because they may have more effective stress management techniques.

Suicides were primarily caused by family issues and disease in 2021, accounting for 33.2% and 18.6% of all suicides, respectively. Some of the other factors that contribute to people taking their lives include drug and/or alcohol addiction (6.4%), marital problems (4.8%), extramarital affairs (4.6%), bankruptcy or debt (3.9%), unemployment (2.2%), exam failure (1%), and professional or career problems (1.6%). About 1.1% of people committed suicide as a result of their poverty.
