Vendors and customers alike expressed disapproval at the onion prices' unexpected spike following the conclusion of the Navratri festivities. According to government data, the maximum price for onions has increased to nearly Rs.70 per kilogram. It is anticipated that this upward trend will continue until December.
Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh told PTI that buffer onions have been offloaded since mid-August, and that in order to prevent future price increases and give customers relief, we are pushing up the retail sale.
It is anticipated that the price would continue to rise during the following month until declining in December.
The Union Consumer Ministry reports that both the wholesale and retail sectors are removing onions from their buffer stock in areas where prices have climbed dramatically. Around 1.7 lakh tonnes of buffer onions have been offloaded since mid-August at different locations in 22 states.
In a similar way, the cost of onions has increased in Karnataka and Maharashtra, among other states. Onions were sold for Rs.65–70 per kilogram by the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) at Yeshwantpur, Bengaluru.
