Positive words for India by Chinese Academician

Zhang Jiadong, Director at the Centre for South Asian Studies at Fudan penned an opinion piece in the Chinese state-owned Newspaper website Global Times with the title "What I feel about the ‘Bharat narrative’ in India." In this article, he praised India regarding India's foreign as well as domestic policy.

The author discussed India while touching on a wide range of topics such as India's economic rise, urban Governance, the positive attitude of Indians towards the Indo-China trade imbalance, Indian foreign policy, and Indian Identity as a global mentor.

Multi Alignment

One of the major topics in the article by the Chinese academician was how there is a very subtle shift in Indian Foreign policy from being a country that used to balance multiple countries to one which is able to align itself with multiple countries without offending standing against others and getting the benefits from each side.

This strategy has been significantly visible more so in the way how India has handled the Russia-Ukraine war situation. It has taken a strong stance of not supporting Ukraine and not condemning Russia but rather being the one who supports peace and is not ready to bruise its relations with an age-old friend.

India has been very vocal about its policy of not taking Ukraine's side in the war and why it would not do so despite strong pressure from the Western powers. India has given the message that it will see its own good and is not ready to risk it all just because it wants to please the Western powers who anyway don't support India all the time. By doing so, India took a risk it could have avoided, but even this risk gave the message of India's ability to make hard/strong decisions and its position to do so, which makes it appear as a strong country in front of the world.

The Chinese academician also talked about the "Bharat Narrative" which basically is about India being very vocal and visible about its point of view and is able to leave a mark on others. The Bharat narrative is not just spread culturally but also economically and politically. India has marketed itself as a world mentor who can lead the world in many ways.
