In a remarkable display of courage and swift action, the Indian Navy's INS Sumitra successfully rescued 19 Pakistani crew members from an Iranian-flagged fishing vessel under pirate attack off the east coast of Somalia.
Deployed for anti-piracy and maritime security operations in the East of Somalia and Gulf of Aden, INS Sumitra thwarted a piracy attempt on the Iranian fishing vessel Iman on Monday. The rescue mission continued as the warship encountered another distress call on the same day.
Commander Vivek Madhwal, spokesperson for the Indian Navy, reported that INS Sumitra, in less than 36 hours, carried out another successful anti-piracy operation off the East Coast of Somalia. This time, it was the fishing vessel Al Naeemi and its 19 crew members who were saved from the clutches of 11 Somali pirates.
