INS Sandhayak Survey Vessel commissioned in Indian Navy
In a new addition to the Indian Navy, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has commissioned a new survey vessel called INS Sandhayak. The Union Minister on February 3, was present at the ceremony at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam to commission the Survey Vessel(large) into the Indian Ocean.
INS Sandhayak is the first among the series of four Survey Vessels Large ships to be commissioned by the Indian Navy. This vessel will be useful for obtaining information about marine waters and conducting surveys of ports and harbours. Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh also stressed that the SVL ship will fulfil the twin objective of obtaining information about the ocean as well as protecting the country as well as others. This ship will be used to act against piracy and smuggling.
Importance of INS Sandhayak
Raksha Mantri said "Many choke points, like the Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Guinea etc. are present in the Indian Ocean, through which a large amount of international trade takes place. Many threats remain at these choke points, the biggest being from pirates." The vessel will be a great tool used to undertake full-scale hydrographic surveys of ports, harbours, navigational channels, routes, coastal areas and deep seas to enable safe marine navigation.

Recently there has been news about the Indian Navy rescuing ships of foreign countries from pirates. Indian Navy has adopted a strict attitude against pirates and smugglers by being intolerant of unlawful activities. Refering this the minister lauded the Indian navy for not only protecting Ships but even foreign vessels.
He reassured the Indian Navy's determination to maintain the freedom of Navigation, trade, and commerce and stop illegal activities and unregulated fishing in the Indian Ocean. Indian Navy has been increasing its strength with every vessel that it is commissioning. All these vessels are equipped with the latest and the best technology. Apart from this Indian Navy has also taken up the role of rescuer and first responder to vessels in danger in the Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific region. The Defence Minister in a press release said "INS Sandhayak will further strengthen India's role as a superpower in the Indo-Pacific region and help the Indian Navy in maintaining peace and security."

Specification of INS Sandhayak
INS Sandhayak was built at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata. The project was directed by the Warship Design Bureau of the Indian Navy.
INS Sandhayak has a displacement of 3.400 tons and a length of 110 metres with a beam of 16m. This ship is also equipped with state-of-the-art hydrophobic equipment, including deep-sea and shallow-water multibeam echo sounders, autonomous underwater vehicles and others.
This ingenious ship has 80 per cent indigenous content with features such as side scan sonar, data acquisition and processing system, remotely operated vehicle, data acquisition and processing system and other features.
