Justin Trudeau apologized in the parliament of Canada for honoring a second world War veteran who happen to have serve in the Nazi army.

Celebrating a Nazi veteran

The House of Commons which the parliament of Canada has been the target of a major embarrassment after the house gave standing ovation to the veteran who served for the Nazi regime.

This incident took place when the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky was on a state visit to Canada. Zelensky made a visit to Canada to strengthen relations with its western ties and strengthen western support in Ukraine's war with Russia. He was present there as distinguished speaker when the incident took place.

The speaker of the house Anthony Rota, invited the veteran Yaroslav Hunk, who is 98 years old to honor him and called him a "Hero of the World War 2". The veteran received 2 standing ovations. He is a Ukrainian-Canadian.

Later it was found out that the Ukrainian veteran fought alongside Nazis in the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS. The division was responsible for grave crime against humanity during Holocausts.

The incident received uproar from around the world Bringing Justin Trudeau major embarrassment. The speaker of the house Anthony Rota accepted his guilt and resigned from his position.

Justin Trudeau on Wednesday presented an apology on the behalf of the whole house and expressed his grief for unknowingly hurting the sentiments of millions of Jews. He said "I would like to present unreserved apologies for what took place on Friday and to President Zelensky and the Ukrainian delegation for the position they were put in, for all of us who were present,". He added "To have unknowingly recognized this individual was a terrible mistake and a violation of the memory of those who suffered grievously at the hands of the Nazi regime." He also said "It was a horrendous violation of the memory of the millions of people who died in the Holocaust,"

Reaction of the Opposition

The opposition leader Pierre Poilievre targeted PM Justin Trudeau for the mishap by saying "Yet the PM allowed for a monumental, Unprecedented and global shame to unfold in this house".

Pierre took to X (Twitter) to share his thoughts on the same by saying "The success of diplomatic visits is the personal responsibility of the Prime Minister of Canada: Justin Trudeau. Instead, we have an unprecedented global embarrassment for our country under his watch. What a disgrace."
