Karwa Chauth is a cherished festival celebrated by married Hindu women, symbolizing love, commitment, and devotion between spouses. On this day, women pray for the long life and well-being of their husbands through fasting and special prayers.

Observing the Fast

Married women, and sometimes unmarried women seeking a good life partner, observe a strict fast from sunrise to moonrise. This fast represents their love and sacrifice for their husbands, making it a deeply meaningful occasion.

When Is Karwa Chauth Celebrated?

Karwa Chauth falls during Krishna Paksha Chaturthi in the Hindu month of Kartik, according to the Purnimanta calendar. For regions following the Amanta calendar, like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and parts of Southern India, the festival is observed in the month of Ashwin. Despite the differences in calendar systems, it is celebrated on the same day across India. In 2024, the festival will be celebrated on Saturday, October 20.

The Story Behind Karwa Chauth

The story of this fesrival is associated with various legends, with one of the most well-known being the story of Veeravati, a queen whose profound love and dedication brought her husband back to life. According to this tale, Veeravati celebrated her first Karwa Chauth after getting married. Unable to withstand her hunger, she fainted. Her brothers, wishing to assist her, deceived her into thinking the moon had appeared, which led her to end her fast prematurely. Unfortunately, soon after, she received the heartbreaking news of her husband’s death.
