KAVACH-Train protection system functional on 15,00 Km route

As a new achievement for the Ministry of Railways, Kavach, the train protection system has been made fully functional on 1,500 Km of train route. This Kavach system is indigenously developed by the country.  The Union Minister of Railways, Ashwinin Vaishnaw gave out the information about the modification of the technology which is installed.

The minister said "We started our journey with the Kavach system in 2016 and till 2020, its pilot work, testing, modification and version enhancement were done. It was in the beginning of 2022, its production and installation started on a large scale." The minister further said "Today, we have installed the system on 1,500-km route and a significant progress has been made (for its installation) on another 3,000-km route on the Mumbai-Howrah and the Delhi-Howrah route,"

This homegrown innovation is a result of collaboration between the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and three Indian vendors.

'Kavach' aims to make train travel safer by assisting loco pilots in avoiding signal violations and over-speeding. It plays a crucial role during challenging weather conditions like dense fog, enhancing overall safety and efficiency in train operations.

The system includes features like automatically applying brakes if the loco pilot fails to do so, as well as repeating line-side signals in the cab, especially beneficial at higher speeds.

According to Minister Vaishnaw, the railway sector has made significant strides in installing 'Kavach,' with plans to cover 1,500 kilometers of route each year. This involves a comprehensive approach, as 'Kavach' is not a standalone device but a complete system with components to be installed at stations, locomotives, tracks, and along routes in the form of towers and radio equipment.

In December 2022, a tender was floated for a 3,000-kilometer installation, showing promising progress. The critical radio survey and design components are 98% complete, with 33% of station installations and 58% of tower installations along the track already accomplished.

The upcoming 'Kavach next generation,' utilizing 4G and 5G technology, is in development. The railways plan to float a tender for its installation on 3,000 kilometers of tracks in December 2023 or January 2024. Another tender for the installation of 6,000 kilometers of 'Kavach' is set for May-June 2024.

Minister Vaishnaw emphasized a focus on capacity enhancement, setting a target of achieving 2,500 kilometers of 'Kavach' installation in 2024-25, up from the current capacity of 1,500 kilometers. The goal is to increase the capacity to 5,000 kilometers per year by 2025-26.

The installation priority for 'Kavach' is given to the Golden Quadrilateral-Golden Diagonal (GQGD) route, followed by high-density and high-utilization network areas. The rapid progress of 'Kavach' is expected to cover the entire railway network in a short period, contributing significantly to the safety of train operations across the country.
