Kejriwal raises question on Mayoral election in Chandigarh after BJP's win
In an unexpected turn of events, Manoj Sonkar of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured victory in the mayoral elections in Chandigarh, defeating AAP's Kuldeep Kumar.
Arvind Kejriwal, chief of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), expressed concern over what he described as "cheating in broad daylight" in the Chandigarh Mayor elections. Kejriwal emphasized the need to address the apparent irregularities, stating, "If these people can stoop so low in a mayor's election, then they can go to any extent in the country's elections. This is very worrying."
AAP-Congress alliance falls short
Despite the AAP forming an alliance with the Congress, the final results saw Manoj Sonkar securing 16 votes to Kumar's 12, with eight votes declared invalid. The AAP and Congress had more votes in the 35-member assembly than the BJP.
After the results were announced, councillors from the AAP and Congress blocs launched a protest, contesting the outcome. The mayoral elections, initially scheduled for January 18, were postponed due to the presiding officer's illness, and the Punjab and Haryana High Court later ordered the election to be held on January 30.
BJP emerges victorious in Chandigarh's Mayoral elections
In the broader context, the BJP secured victory in the 35-member Chandigarh Municipal Corporation with 14 councillors, while the AAP and Congress obtained 13 and seven councillors, respectively. The Shiromani Akali Dal holds one councillor in the municipal corporation.
With Manoj Sonkar now elected as the mayor, the focus shifts to the upcoming elections for the positions of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor. The Congress is expected to field its candidates for these roles as the AAP and Congress councillors continue to contest the mayoral election results.
