Kerala: Male IT Professional Disguised in Burqa Arrested for Placing Camera in Lulu Mall's Women's Restroom

The individual, named Abhimanyu, was taken to jail by the court, according to the Kochi Police. The phone was located in the bathroom during the check.

A 23-year-old male IT professional has been apprehended for reportedly donning a burqa to enter a women's restroom at Lulu Mall, a well-known shopping complex in Kochi, Kerala. Once inside, he allegedly used his mobile phone to record videos of women.

The individual, identified as Abhimanyu, was arrested by Kochi Police on Wednesday and subsequently taken into judicial custody. A search revealed that the phone was concealed in the restroom.

Abhimanyu, who holds a B Tech degree, has been charged with offenses outlined in sections 354(C) (Voyeurism) and 419 (Impersonation) of the IPC, as well as Section 66 E of the Information Technology Act. These legal actions were taken on the same day as reported by the PTI news agency.

The accused was presented before a local court, where he was remanded to 14 days of judicial custody, according to an official from the Kalamassery police station.

The individual is employed at a prominent IT firm located in the city's Infopark, as per the police.

It is alleged that Abhimanyu disguised himself in a burqa and gained access to the women's restroom. Inside, he strategically positioned his mobile phone in a small cardboard box, making a hole for the camera to capture visuals.

Subsequently, he affixed the box to the restroom door, according to the police's account.

Following the placement of the camera, he exited the women's restroom and positioned himself near the restroom's main entrance. The security staff at the mall became suspicious of his behavior and promptly alerted the police. Law enforcement personnel arrived at the scene, confronted the individual, and initiated an inquiry.

Further investigation revealed that he had adopted the guise of a woman by wearing a burqa, all while secretly recording activities within the washroom using his mobile phone, according to the police.

As a result, both the burqa and the mobile phone belonging to the accused were confiscated, and he was taken into custody. The police are currently engaged in determining whether the individual has engaged in similar actions at other locations in the past.
