Kolkata Rape Case: On Wednesday night, thousands of women took to the streets across West Bengal to protest the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This tragic event occurred on August 9. The protest, part of the ‘Reclaim the Night’ campaign, started around 11:55 PM, coinciding with Independence Day celebrations, and spread across major cities and smaller towns, including prominent locations in Kolkata.

Violence and Unrest During Protests

The protests turned violent at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital when an unidentified mob stormed the emergency ward and caused damage. The doctor's body was found in a seminar hall at the hospital. There was also unrest reported at Mandirtala in Howrah district, where protesters clashed with the ruling Trinamool Congress members during their ‘Freedom at Midnight’ celebrations.

Rimjhim Sinha Leads the Charge

Rimjhim Sinha, the organizer of the ‘Reclaim the Night’ movement, described the event as a new freedom struggle for women. The campaign’s symbol, a viral poster showing a red hand holding a crescent moon, represents this struggle.
