Maharashtra Congress Pushes for Mumbai to Be Declared a Union Territory
Maharashtra Congress Chief Nana Patole has raised concerns about the upcoming special session of Parliament, scheduled to be held from September 18 to 22. Patole alleged that the undisclosed agenda of this session is to declare Mumbai as a Union Territory, effectively separating it from the state of Maharashtra.
Patole criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for convening the session and claimed that previous governments had not called special sessions for significant issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic, demonetization in 2016, or the situation in Manipur. According to Patole, the sudden decision to hold this session raises suspicions about the government's intentions.
Patole argued that Mumbai is an international city and a vital financial hub. However, he expressed concerns about the relocation of key institutions and businesses from Mumbai to other regions. He specifically mentioned the shifting of Air India, the International Financial Services Centre, and the diamond market, among others, as part of this alleged plan. Patole also claimed that there are intentions to move the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange to Gujarat.
In his allegations, Patole insinuated that the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi government, comprising the Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress, was a significant obstacle to these decisions that he views as detrimental to the state. He suggested that the central government played a role in bringing down the Maha Vikas Aghadi government to advance its agenda.
The special session of Parliament has sparked speculation and concerns among opposition leaders and residents of Maharashtra, who fear potential changes that could impact Mumbai's status and autonomy. However, the government has not officially disclosed the session's agenda, leaving room for various speculations and interpretations.
