Major boost to Defence, Rajnath Singh Approves 45,000 crore worth 9 acquisitions

On September 15, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh chaired the Defence Acquisition Council(DAC) where he approved 9 Acquisition proposals. These proposals with cost a total of Rs 45,000 crores. These acquisitions will highly improve India's defence capabilities.

In a state the defence ministry said “All these procurements will be made from Indian vendors under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured (IDMM)/Buy (Indian) category which will give a substantial boost to the Indian defence Industry towards achieving the goal of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’,”

What will Indian Air force get?

1. Twelve Sukhoi Su-30MKIs costing Rs 11,000 crores-

These will be manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited(HAL). Along with the aircraft, the project will also include related ground systems which assists in operations. These Sukhoi aircrafts will have to be equipped with 60 percent indigenous content. These will be the most upgraded versions of Sukhoi aircraft that the Indian Air Force will get. These will be mounted and equipped with multiple Indian weapons and sensors as said by defence officials.

2. Avionic upgradation of Dornier Aircraft-

The Dornier aircraft HAL - DO - 228  is a highly versatile multi-purpose light transport aircraft which is able to work for different purposes such as troops transportation, maritime surveillance, Aerial survey, search and rescue etc. The upgraded facility will assist in improving the ability of the aircraft to undertake operations by improving reliability and accuracy.

3. Dhruvastra Short Range Air-to-Surface Missile for DHRUV MK-IV choppers-
These will be powerful weapons with great ability to hit the target.  These missiles will be developed indigenously.

What will Indian Navy get?

1. Next Generation Survey Vessels- these vessels will increase the ability of Navy to perform Hydrographic Operations.

Forces will also get-

1. Light Armored Multipurpose Vehicles(LAMV)
2. Integrated Surveillance and Targeting System(ISAT-S)
3.High Mobility Vehicle(HMV)
4. Gun Towing Vehicles
These systems and vehicles will improve abilities to attack, mobility, protection and increased survivability, swift mobilisation  and deployment of artillery guns and Radar
While commenting on the approvals given in the meeting, the defence minister stressed on the importance of indigenization by saying “Rather than a threshold of 50 percent indigenous content for IDDM projects, we should aim for a minimum 60-65 percent indigenous content,”
He also directed the chief of defense staff, defence secretary and DG(acquisition and service chiefs to  focus on increasing the indigenous content threshold in consultation with the Indian industry.
