On Friday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the severe floods in West Bengal. These floods were triggered by water released from the Maithon and Panchet dams.

In her letter, Banerjee expressed the state's intention to cut ties with the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC). She criticized the DVC for “unilaterally releasing water” that led to this disaster.
Current Flood Situation
Banerjee highlighted that West Bengal is experiencing its worst flooding in the Lower Damodar region since 2009. Over 1,000 square kilometers have been affected, impacting nearly five million people. The floods have caused significant damage to crops, public infrastructure, and private properties, including homes and livestock.
Water Release Details
She mentioned that around 500,000 cusecs of water had been released from the Maithon and Panchet dams recently. This action, according to Banerjee, has severely worsened the situation for the residents.

Banerjee visited the flood-affected areas and described the scene as one of “utter misery.” She reported witnessing unprecedented destruction of property and infrastructure.
