West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has embarked on a 12-day visit to Dubai and Spain from September 13 to September 23 with the aim of attracting foreign investment to her state. The visit is seen as a crucial step in promoting economic development in West Bengal and comes ahead of the 7th Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS), scheduled to be held on November 21-22 in Kolkata.

During her visit, Mamata Banerjee will visit Dubai, Madrid, and Barcelona, where she is scheduled to hold a series of business meetings and engagements with potential investors. The primary focus will be to attract foreign capital and promote business opportunities in West Bengal.

According to officials, Mamata Banerjee's itinerary includes a one-night stay in Dubai, followed by a three-day visit to Madrid for business summits and meetings. She will then proceed to Barcelona for an additional two to three days of business meetings. The delegation will later return to Dubai for further business discussions before heading back to Kolkata on September 23.

This visit is of significant importance as it marks Mamata Banerjee's efforts to enhance economic ties and attract investments for West Bengal. The Central government recently granted the necessary permissions for her visits to Spain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Mamata Banerjee expressed her intentions to travel abroad after a gap of five years, despite receiving multiple invitations during that period. She emphasized her commitment to returning quickly in case of any emergency. The Chief Minister has previously traveled to countries like Singapore, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands to promote foreign investments in her state.

Spain holds particular significance in this visit as it was the theme country of the 46th Kolkata International Book Fair (KIBF) held earlier this year. Spain has also invited the organizers of KIBF to participate in the Liber Book Fair in Madrid in 2025, showcasing the potential for cultural and business exchanges between the two regions.

Apart from the business meetings, developments on the sports front are also expected during the visit. A delegation of noted football clubs from Kolkata will accompany Mamata Banerjee to Spain, along with former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly. This visit aims to strengthen economic and cultural ties while exploring opportunities for mutual growth and collaboration between West Bengal and the regions visited.
