He was admitted to AIIMS Delhi after his health deteriorated on Thursday evening. Here he breathed his last. The whole country is in mourning due to his death.

The Manmohan Singh, who was the Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, retired from the Rajya Sabha earlier this year, ending his political innings in the Upper House after 33 years. India's only Sikh Prime Minister reached the Rajya Sabha in 1991, four months after taking oath as Finance Minister in the government led by PV Narasimha Rao in June 1991. He represented Assam for five terms in the Upper House and moved to Rajasthan in 2019.

He was born on 26 September 1932 in Punjab, Manmohan Singh did his graduation and post-graduation in economics from Punjab University. Dr. Manmohan Singh completed the Economics Tripos from Cambridge University in 1957. After this, he obtained a D.Phil. After teaching at Punjab University and Delhi School of Economics, he joined the Government of India as an economic advisor in the Ministry of Commerce in 1971. Dr. Manmohan Singh was promoted to the post of Chief Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Finance in 1972
